I hope your summer was both restful and rewarding. As we welcome students for the fall semester, I am looking forward to the year ahead. Throughout the summer, our campus community has been working behind the scenes to strengthen our programs, enhance our services, and prepare our campus for another year of student success. I am deeply grateful for their efforts. The start of the fall semester is always an exciting time. As we begin this new academic year, we welcome 10,533 students to our community, both in-person and those enrolled fully online, slightly ahead of where we were last fall. I want to thank the Student Support Services staff and volunteers who are at welcome tables greeting our students today and throughout the week. Some New Members to Our Campus Community In July, we welcomed Dr. Jessica Perez as Assistant Vice President and Chief Careers and Industry Partnership Officer, and Dr. Shu-Ping Han as Dean of Academic Initiatives in the Office of Academic Affairs. Dr. Perez’s appointment is a part of CUNY Beyond, CUNY's systemwide initiative to strengthen career-connected education and student success, through which Queensborough is receiving $5.5 million in dedicated funding. You will have an opportunity to meet Dr. Perez and learn more about this work later this afternoon at the President’s Welcome Back. Additionally, we are fortunate to welcome 11 new full-time faculty who will join our caring community of educators. To all our new colleagues, we are happy you are here! Facilities/ Buildings and Grounds Our Buildings and Grounds (B&G) team has been busy this summer, with work across campus to support facility improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and critical maintenance projects while also preparing the campus for the fall semester. Major work included exterior repairs on the Y Building, waterproofing at the RFK Building, ongoing fire alarm upgrades in the Medical Arts Building, and improvements to the Science Building cafeteria area. The team also responded to several significant facilities challenges, including air-conditioning disruptions in the Library, Medical Arts, and W buildings, and emergency repairs to elevators in the Science and Humanities buildings. Additionally, B&G has been working to reimagine some of the space in the basement of the library building. The areas that formerly housed the ID Office, a Computer Lab, and a classroom are being used to host a suite of offices that will be a hub of support services for our students in career exploration, career advising, and internships. We will share more on this transformation later this afternoon. Thanks to the leadership of our executive co-chairs, Dr. Andrea Salis , Dr. Robert McAlear , and Dr. Peter Bales , Queensborough is on schedule in the self-study phase of our 2026-2027 Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) reaccreditation cycle. Draft reports have been developed through campus working groups, and a completed self-study will be shared later this fall. Also, this semester, the MSCHE-appointed site team chair will conduct a preliminary campus visit, with the full evaluation team visit scheduled for spring 2027. Over the next few months, there will be several opportunities for campus engagement ahead of the site visit. President’s Welcome Back I’m looking forward to seeing you at noon at the President’s Welcome Back in the Humanities Theatre & Performing Arts Center (QPAC), where we will share more details on these and other topics and have a chance to catch up with one another over light refreshments. Finally, everything we do is in support of our students. Thank you, as always, for your dedication to them. CUNY Names Four College Presidents Get to Know Dr. Mangino Front and Center Among Power Women of Queens! Meet President-Designate Mangino The CUNY Board of Trustees mandates that each College in the City University of New York have a Governance Plan and Governance Body with mixed constituencies. Such bodies will deal with policy matters for the college and for the University. Queensborough has its own Governance Plan. That plan creates the Academic Senate as the local governing body and it has its own Bylaws of the Academic Senate and there are also the Bylaws of the Faculty, both of which need to be consistent with the QCC Governance Plan. The Senate and faculty have authority to alter their bylaws. Only the CUNY BOT may alter the Governance Plan upon request from the College being formally submitted from at least two of the following constituencies: the President, the Faculty or the Students supported by formal referenda. Strategic planning at the college is a process that produces an annual strategic plan based on the strategic priorities of the college and an annual completion report that demonstrates the degree to which the institution has met its goals and objectives for the year. The process is informed by the input from academic departments, college divisions, HEO and student feedback, and year-long consultation with the College Advisory Planning Committee (CAPC) , which comprises the senior leadership of the college, the faculty, and the students. The QCC Art Gallery of the City University of New York is a vital educational and cultural resource for Queensborough Community College, the Borough of Queens and the surrounding communities.
