They stole my money
A friend could not come on the trip so another friend who is a past Viking traveler said she could go with me. Viking charged me $2000 for the change!
This is highway robbery. I contacted them months before the trip.
This is just an excuse to steal my money. This is the last time I will ever travel with Viking.

Oversold and underdelivered and abandoned in China
- Flights changed, promised hotel/airport transfer not provided, we paid Beijing hotel and taxi, excursions were poor and staff spoke little English.
We just got back from a Viking cruise to Japan, South Korea, and China. Our flights were changed several times, requiring us to leave a day early and come home a day late. We were assured we would be given a hotel at the end and be taken to the airport. When we got on the ship, Viking knew nothing about the arrangements made by Viking Air. After hours with customer service, we were given a hotel room in Beijing but were responsible for getting ourselves to the airport in a taxi. Taxis in China only take cash. We spent days trying to find a bank that would accept our ATM card (in every port we stopped in in China). Finally, we got some cash at a bank in Central Beijing late on the last day. We did make it home, but Viking abandoned us and the others in our situation in a Communist country! We all had paid for travel to the airport in our contracts.
The excursions were, for the most part, a waste of time, driving for hours on buses held captive by tour guides who expounded on their own personal opinions, including politics and religion.
The staff on the ship did not speak English. Knowing a few words of English but not being able to answer questions or understand simple drink orders got old really fast.
There were some good moments on this trip, but this is the most expensive trip we have ever taken and, by far, the biggest waste of money we’ve ever made. We will not be booking any more Viking Cruises. Their marketing is very slick, but their product is not at all what they sell.
Prior to this trip
Name i could trust
Letting someone else make arrangements
Marketing was lying about the crew understanding english
Abandoning us as americans in a communist country
Inability to notify customers in a timely and honest manner
Preferred solution: Price reduction
User's recommendation: Stay away from Viking Ocean Cruises
No exception for DEATH
- Husband died 4.5 months before our cruise; I notified them in 6 weeks.
- No 120-day exceptions.
- We were return customers; I will not use Viking.
My husband died 4 1/2 months before our cruise. I notified them within 6 weeks, after the shock wore off, even while still grieving.
They make no exceptions to the 120 days, even though they fill the spaces. We were return customers.
I will not use Viking again. There are ALWAYS circumstances that should allow for full refunds.
User's recommendation: Do not die before your cruise.
Terrible service
Couldn't talk to anyone about job opportunities. Just trying to get a job.
Geez. How about some humans...

Refusal to reimburse unused trip insurance for trip cancelled 2 years out.
- May 2027 cruise booked; $25 down per person and $1,700 for insurance.
- Canceled Nov 2025; no payment, no contract, and Viking kept the insurance.
I booked a cruise in October 2025 to take place in May 2027. The down payment was $25 per person, but the purchase of trip insurance was required.
I canceled the trip in November 2025, and Viking refused to reimburse me for the trip insurance of nearly $1,700. Note that I had never paid for the actual cruise, so I never had a contract to go on the trip. This is significant because it means there was nothing to insure at the time I canceled.
Therefore, there was no possibility that the insurance company would have to pay out on the policy. Because they provided no services to me, they were unjustly enriched by keeping my $1,700 payment for essentially nothing.
Unresponsive and rigid customer interactions
Poor communications
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: If there is any chance you will cancel your trip, be aware that you will not get your significant trip insurance money returned to you
Insurance payments are rarely, if ever, refunded. Like many, you were drawn in by the $25 per person reservation. You're definitely not alone.
$25 deposit and trip insurance required? Did you choose an option other than the regular $500 USD per person deposit? It sounds like you gambled on your initial payment to keep it low.
You should not have booked the cruise so far in advance. GGA is the trip insurance company and is entirely separate from VC.
Their terms of service which you clearly did not read, only provide refunds within ten days of policy purchase.
After the initial ten-day period there is NO such thing as a partial/percentage refund. That’s just wishful thinking on your part.

Viking Cruise Line are Thieves!
- Cancer diagnosis led to cancellation of the Sept sailing, and Viking kept $145,000.
- Insurance not offered to non-Americans; Manulife suggested.
My husband and I had a 2-month trip booked with Viking Cruises. A trip of a lifetime that we were so excited for. The sailing date was Sept 15th of this year, but sadly in June he was diagnosed with stage IV renal cell carcinoma. I have to say I'm disappointed and frankly disgusted with Viking's refund policy in instances like this. Yes, we read and understood the contract when we booked, and no, we did not purchase insurance. It was not offered to non-Americans, and when I asked where I could get it, whomever I spoke to said, and I quote, 'I think Manulife sells it.' As avid cruisers in excellent health, it just slipped our minds, and we understand it was our error to forget. When someone is staring death in the face and looking forward to some enormous medical bills, to have a large rich corporation keep $145,000 of our money is not something I would have expected from a wealthy corporation like Viking Cruises. Viking is a public company, but its principal owner and founder, Torstein Hagen, has an estimated net worth of approximately $14.7 billion!
During Covid, we had a long river cruise booked and received an immediate refund, no questions asked. Now, not so much. I thought they were better than that. This is not a small chunk of change. It's $145,000!! Surely they can do better than this? A credit for a future date? A max penalty of $25,000 even?
As a side note, the two ladies my husband spoke with when he called Viking to cancel (2 days after being diagnosed) said all the things they were taught but were very condescending and really just wanted to move on. They quoted the penalty of $145,000, and that was that, no exceptions. I thought Viking was above this.
After recently speaking to a Viking rep, they generously offered us $1,000 each as a sign of good faith. How insulting! Especially considering they resold our room! We will never cruise with Viking in the future and will discourage anyone from doing so. It's all about the $$$ to them. No morals whatsoever.

If you were spending six figures to travel, you should have researched travel insurance long before handing over that kind of money.
Spent a lot of money to travel to Italy in the fall. Did not see things we went to Italy to see because Viking came into ports when museums and access to cities were closed.
i feel angry and frustrated. I will never have another opportunity to se the sights in Italy that I went to see.
BE VERY CAREFUL WITH YOUR SCHEDULING.
User's recommendation: Definitiely take your own responsibility to match dates with things you want to see. viking wil accept no responsibility and will not inform you of closures.

Payment !!!!!!!
- Attended August training; did not pass but expected payment for time attended.
- No payment received; IBAN provided, please investigate and advise ETA.
I am reaching out regarding an important issue. Back in August, I attended the training with your company.
Even though I did not pass the training, I was informed that I would still receive payment for the time I attended. However, to this day, I have not received any payment.
I had already submitted my IBAN details through the system and even provided them again, but no transfer has been made. I kindly ask you to look into this matter urgently and let me know when I can expect the payment.

Terrible customer service.
- We booked a cruise for four couples.
- Our brother had a medical emergency before the cruise and died; Viking refused transfers or vouchers or refunds.
no customer service. will not call back or even try to resolve issue
We scheduled a cruise with four couples. Brother experienced a medical emergency 6 weeks before the cruise.
We notified Viking and asked if we could transfer to another family member or get a voucher for another cruise. The answer was no. Brother passed away. We were eligible for a partial refund, but because we called one day too late, Viking would not refund the money.
Three couples went on the cruise, and that fourth cabin remained empty.
Heartless and heartbreaking. Never again.

Mediocre food and 2 missed porrs
- Ports canceled due to a damaged lock; tipping was disclosed at $200 per person, $400 total, voucher issued.
- Onboard dining was mostly mediocre.
We were notified about a week before our departure that we couldn't dock in our 1st 2 ports because a lock had been damaged. After further investigation, the lock was closed due to maintenance that is scheduled at least a year in advance.
They should not have even offered the cruise for our dates. On board, the food was mostly mediocre. A couple of main dishes and all of the soups were excellent. The sandwich entrées for lunch were practically inedible, and the rest of the food was what I would expect from a very cheap chain restaurant.
The staff was either undertrained or the boat was understaffed. Whichever it was, it was not good. I didn't expect plates to be cleared as soon as we finished, but they should have been cleared before the next course was served. And, while I didn't pay for the beverage package, I generally did not get offered a beverage until my tablemates had finished their first.
The onshore excursions were informative and the guides were delightful. But there is not much time to explore on your own. The bright spot of our cruise was the wonderful woman who maintained our room. She was wonderful, and I gave her a large extra tip.
Speaking of tips, on the day before we departed, we were told about the $200 per person required tip that is not included in the fare. So add $400 to your cost for the cruise for 2. I did register a complaint with Viking about the missed ports and poor service.
They have given me a $400 voucher for another cruise in the next year. It will go to waste because I have no intention of ever cruising with or even recommending Viking Cruises again.
Over promised under delivered
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: Don't book with viking cruises
Full refund??? You enjoyed the onshore excursions and the cleanliness of your room.
Your comments about the food is your opinion only. Others may have found the food delicious. Tipping policies are told to you ahead of time.
You already complained and were given a $400 credit. Personally, I would be embarrassed to ask for a full refund but that's just me.

Boat: Odin, date 11-3-2025
To Viking Customer Relations,
Im writing to share feedback on my recent Viking Odin cruise departing November 3, 2025. Unfortunately, this trip fell far below the standards Ive come to expect from Viking after six of your river cruises.
To be clear, several staff members were exceptional:Jessica, our room caretakerThe bar staffChris, our cruise director
Their professionalism and service were the bright spots of the entire trip.
However, outside of these individuals, the overall experience was extremely disappointing.
The trip simply did not meet Vikings usual level of quality, and the food in particular was consistently poor throughout the cruise. Based on my past experiences with Viking, this was unexpected and discouraging.
We most likely will make it our last.
I hope you will review these concerns to help restore the high level of service and dining that has set Viking apart in the past.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. Room 215
User's recommendation: Perhaps take your trip other then ship Odin
Level of customer service has gone way, way down hill since our first cruise with Viking [river only back then] in 2015. It was very personal, now it seems like just another big business.
