Resolved: Unauthorized activity forcing cancellation to protect my identity
- Booking was taken over by the travel agency without authorization.
- I was shut out by Viking and not informed.
Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with full refund. Keep kicking and knocking until complaint gets to the correct department/persin.
I booked a Viking cruise that is being illegally hijacked by Fora Travel-Marianna Prueger, agent. I NEVER authorized this hostile takeover nor was I informed of it occurring until I became shut out by Viking.
I requested it be returned to original point of purchase but opposition was apparent. My purchase was stolen and now I am being forced to protect myself by cancelling credit cards and booking
Viking is a quality cruise
Terrible and often non-existent customer service which refused to give contact information in order to retrieve my hijacked
Preferred solution: I would like my original solo booking reinstated and an apology

MY FIRST AND LAST VIKING CRUISE: NEVER AGAIN!
- Poor handling of itinerary changes and inadequate substitutes.
- Long bus days replaced river time.
- 60% voucher is unsatisfactory; cash preferred.
My first and last Viking cruise: never again!
This was our first Viking cruise, and it will certainly be our last.
We booked Viking's Passage to Eastern Europe, from Bucharest to Budapest aboard the Viking Ullur, expecting the upscale river-cruise experience Viking advertises. We understood before departure that historically low water levels on the Danube were beyond Viking's control and could require changes to the itinerary. What we did not anticipate was how poorly Viking would manage those changes, the inadequate alternatives it would provide, and its failure to deliver anything reasonably comparable to the experience we had purchased.
Shortly before departure, we learned that much of the planned itinerary could not be operated as scheduled. We asked about canceling or postponing the trip but were not given that option. Ironically, once on the cruise, we learned that some other passengers apparently had been able to cancel or reschedule.
The first days were dreadful. Instead of the relaxing river journey and excursions we had purchased, we spent extraordinary amounts of time traveling by bus. On our first day, approximately 13 hours passed before we finally boarded the ship, with dinner served around 10 p.m. On subsequent days, we sometimes spent seven or eight hours on buses for relatively brief visits to attractions. Some scheduled ports and included tours disappeared altogether.
The buses themselves were hardly consistent with what one expects from an upscale cruise company: no Wi-Fi, no electrical outlets, and hours upon hours on the road. Meals provided during these transfers were sometimes in restaurants far below the standard we expected from Viking. On some days, we traveled for hours for a 30-minute visit here or a one-hour stop there. This was not a river cruise with occasional coach transportation. At times, it felt more like an exhausting bus tour interrupted by brief periods aboard a ship.
Communication made the situation worse. We frequently did not know what we would be doing the following day until late the night before. Plans changed repeatedly, and the cruise leadership did little to address our frustration. I personally complained, yet never felt that our concerns were seriously addressed.
Once we were finally able to spend meaningful time aboard the Viking Ullur, things improved considerably. The ship was comfortable, the onboard staff were pleasant and professional, and the food was good. We also greatly enjoyed traveling with our friends. These positive aspects deserve recognition. Unfortunately, they could not compensate for the fundamental failure to provide the trip we had purchased.
The problems continued through the end of the itinerary. Today, for example, we had to leave our luggage at 6:00 a.m. and board yet another bus from Belgrade to Budapest, with lunch at an inexpensive roadside stop and a potentially lengthy border crossing into Hungary before eventually checking into a Budapest hotel at night. In practical terms, another vacation day was largely consumed by transportation.
Then comes the final day of the tour in Budapest: a free day, apparently with no planned Viking activities, tours, or meals. Adding a hotel night and calling the following day part of the itinerary is hardly equivalent to the cruise experience and services that were contracted and paid for.
The most disappointing part of Viking's response is its proposed compensation. Viking offered a future-cruise voucher equal to 60% of the paid cruise fare. A voucher is of little value to passengers who, after this experience, have no intention of traveling with Viking again. To use it, we would have to spend substantial additional money with the same company that failed to deliver the trip we purchased.
That is not meaningful compensation. It is an incentive to buy another Viking cruise.
I fully recognize that Viking did not cause the low water level of the Danube. That is not the central issue. The real question is how a premium travel company responds when circumstances beyond its control prevent it from delivering the contracted itinerary. Viking controlled the quality of the alternative arrangements, the amount of time passengers were required to spend on buses, the quality of substitute meals and activities, its communication with passengers, and its response to complaints.
In our case, those decisions repeatedly fell far below our expectations.
We have taken other cruises, including two with Celebrity Cruises, and the comparison makes this experience even more disappointing. We know what good cruise service looks like, including how passengers should be treated when problems occur. This experience was in an entirely different category.
We paid a substantial amount of money for what was marketed as an upscale river cruise. We did not purchase a multi-day bus tour through Eastern Europe with occasional nights aboard a ship, canceled ports and excursions, mediocre substitute meals, constantly changing schedules, and a final free day in Budapest without the services we expected.
Viking may describe the disruption as the consequence of low water. Low water explains why a ship cannot sail. It does not explain or excuse every decision made after that.
We would have understood unavoidable changes. What we cannot accept is paying for one experience, receiving something substantially inferior, and then being offered compensation that requires us to spend even more money with Viking.
For that reason, I am seeking appropriate compensation in cash rather than a future-cruise voucher. I would prefer an amicable resolution, but I am prepared to pursue the matter further if necessary.
A luxury travel company should be judged not only by how it performs when everything goes according to plan but by how it treats its customers when things go wrong. That is precisely when service, organization, communication, and respect for passengers matter most.
Viking failed that test for us.
My first Viking cruise will also be my last. Never again.
Restaurant and room cleaning staff members
Totally unreliable and unresponsive company
Preferred solution: Price reduction
User's recommendation: Don't travel with Viking Ever
Considering Legal Action Against Viking Cruises After our recent experience with Viking and the company's response to our request for fair compensation, I intend to consult and potentially retain an attorney to evaluate the possibility of pursuing a class action against Viking Cruises. I would like to hear from other travelers whose Viking cruises or tours were significantly disrupted, altered, or failed to provide substantial portions of the services and experiences they had contracted and paid for—and who were subsequently offered compensation primarily in the form of a future travel voucher.
For many of us, such a voucher is not meaningful compensation. It requires passengers to spend additional money with the same company whose performance they found substantially below what was promised. Some of us have no intention of traveling with Viking again and believe that appropriate compensation should be provided in cash rather than as credit toward another Viking trip. If you have had a similar experience and may be interested in joining other affected travelers in exploring possible collective legal action, please contact us and briefly describe your experience at: vikingcruisesclasaction@***.com At this stage, we are gathering information and identifying travelers with similar experiences.
Any decision regarding legal action, including whether a class action would be appropriate, will be made after consultation with qualified legal counsel. Please feel free to share this post with other Viking passengers who may have experienced similar circumstances.

Changes in the cruise itinerary and level of services
- The itinerary was changed due to low water.
- We could not cancel or reschedule.
- Long bus days with limited visits and uncertain schedules.
A Very Disappointing Viking Danube Experience After an Itinerary Change
I recently traveled on a Viking Danube itinerary that was significantly changed shortly before departure because of low water levels on the river. I fully understand that Viking cannot control the level of the Danube.
My disappointment concerns the travel experience that was provided after the itinerary had to be changed and the limited options we were given beforehand.
After learning about the changes, we asked whether we could cancel or reschedule because the revised trip was substantially different from the river cruise we had booked. We were not permitted to do so, and we therefore continued with the trip.
The first two days were particularly disappointing. We spent approximately seven to eight hours a day traveling by bus, in some cases for relatively brief visits. On one day, for example, our itinerary included about seven hours on a bus, a 30-minute stop and a roughly one-hour winery visit.
The bus we traveled on that day had neither Wi-Fi nor power outlets for charging phones. This was very different from the river-cruise experience I had expected when booking the trip.
I was also disappointed with the meals provided during these excursions. On one occasion, I found the food so poor that I was unable to eat much of the meal. After approximately thirteen hours of traveling and touring on our first day, we finally boarded the ship and had dinner at close to 10 p.m.
Another significant problem for me was the lack of predictability.
During this portion of the trip, we generally learned only late in the day what the arrangements would be for the following day. That made it difficult to relax or plan and added considerably to my frustration.
Once we were finally able to sail, the experience improved. The ship itself and the time spent cruising were much closer to what I had originally expected. Unfortunately, that improvement did not change my overall disappointment with how the major itinerary disruption was handled.
Again, I do not blame Viking for low water levels on the Danube.
River conditions are beyond the company's control.
My concern is that the substitute experience involved long days of bus transportation, short visits, meals I found disappointing, and considerable uncertainty about the daily schedule. Had I known before booking that this would constitute such a significant portion of my trip, I would not have chosen this itinerary.
For travelers considering a Viking river cruise, particularly during periods when water levels may affect navigation, I would recommend asking specifically what alternatives will be provided if the ship cannot follow the scheduled itinerary and what cancellation or rescheduling options will be available.
Based on my personal experience on this trip, I would not choose this itinerary again.
Good restaurant food and some exceptional room and dinning servers
Poorly managed contingency plans
Preferred solution: Cash the promised voucher. I don't want to travel with Viking ever again.

Impossible Policy dealing with low river levels
- Low Rhine water may disrupt cruises.
- Credit terms unclear; responses vary.
- Bus options and evac prep may apply.
- We would not recommend Viking.
We are three couples looking so forward to our Rhine River Cruise on September 11th .
We read articles regarding the water levels and the disruption of the river cruises .
We immediately called Viking only to get very conflicting answers to this issue .
We respectfully requested a credit for another river cruise only to be told that it is the discretion of Viking and that we have no say in what will happen regarding a credit. We were also told that Viking may put us on buses to see the countries that we were supposed to see by boat.
They also told us that we need to be prepared for an evacuation and should not unpack our bags .This is not at all relaxing!
One representative told us that we can get a Viking credit to use within 12 to 24 months .
Another representative said there is no such thing and if any credit at all it issued, it must be used within 12 months
When we booked the cruise, we were offered the insurance at $750 per person for one week. We declined and took it through an outside insurance company . The Viking agent said to us its a shame we didnt take Vikings insurance because we would then get all of our money back. I called the other insurance company and they cant cover low rivers .
The last correspondence we had was that they can decide the fate of our vacation up to four days before the trip
I was in the travel business for 40 years and I decided to leave after Covid .
I am appalled at how we have been treated.
We were looking forward to the best vacation and were planning to get a large group together next year to do another cruise. I would not recommend Viking to anyone ever again.
I am very anxious to see what our vacation will become . Getting ready for a trip like this should be so exciting instead it has become the most stressful thing I have ever had to deal with.
User's recommendation: This cruise line cannot be trusted . They have no respect for their clients .

Viking knew about disruption to cruise itinerary but never disclosed
- Low water forced a ship swap.
- More than half the planned ports were cancelled.
- Bus to Rotterdam and two days docked; river has been dry.
We booked the Rhine Getaway for early August 2026. A week before our trip, we received a notice regarding low water levels on the Rhine, and we may encounter a ship swap.
The letter gave the impression that this is common and Viking is prepared. However, when we boarded, we were piecemealed information on the ship swap. By day 2, we learned that over half of the planned port stops were canceled; we were going to have to board a bus and travel 400 miles to Rotterdam, where we will remain docked for 2 days until the planned travel date to Kinderjink and the final port stop, Amsterdam. What Viking didn't share was common knowledge and known for months!
We have family in Rüdesheim that we met up with in Strasbourg, and they shared that the river has been dry for months. Now, why the guest relations on our ship are behaving as if this is all something that just occurred is deceitful and intentionally misleading passengers.
This is nothing but greed on the part of Viking, as I guarantee my fellow passengers would have preferred Viking just cancel the cruise, but that's money out of Viking's pocket. Shady company with extremely questionable business practices.

No real updates concerning boat vs. bus travel times, they keep saying conditions constantly changing.
Have a trip booked for mid-September, trying to decide whether to cancel or not. Viking is not really forthcoming with any relevant information on how much it is currently by bus versus river.
They seem to do this to keep you on the hook well into the cancellation period to keep as much as they can. I cannot see paying $20,000 for a bus tour.
Poor timely communication
Preferred solution: Timely updates regarding disruptions before boarding.
We're on Viking Rhine Getaway in about 10 days. Received email from Viking today.
They are busing passengers between Rotterdam and Strasbourg. That's a 400 mile all-day trip with bathroom stops and lunch. We'll spend 2 days on a docked boat in Rotterdam and ride the bus - missing Cologne, Koblenz, the castles on the middle Rhine, Rüdesheim, and Speyer - 3 days of the 6 on the river. Not even close to the cruise we purchased.
For our trouble, they will give us a credit of 60% of the cruise fare - but only if we take the trip that we'd prefer not to now.
Friends on other lines are receiving money back or full credit (or better) to reschedule. Very disappointed in Viking.

Frustrated with all the junk mail
If marketing mail troubles you, avoid sailing with Viking! Junk mail almost every day
Probably 3 years since I've sailed with Viking. I still continue to get their junk mail. I am not going to be cruising with them again, and after repeatedly asking to be taken off their mailing list, it continues.
Lovely ship and cruise if you are a formal kind of a person
Too quiet and laid back to my liking

Terrible customer service
- Booking errors by the agent caused follow-ups.
- Quoted 1799 CAD for post-cruise stay, invoiced 2699 CAD; price for another date; I won't book Viking.
Cancelled my cruise for March 2027. While booking, the agent made numerous mistakes.
I spent an enormous amount of time calling back to correct them. I was quoted a price of $1799 CDN for a post-cruise stay, but I was invoiced $2699. When I called back to have this resolved, the agent told me this price was for another date. The agent who had made numerous mistakes was giving me a lot of BS!
I asked for his supervisor. After a long wait, she replied and said she'd discuss this issue with her team and get back to me. I never had the phone call. I was ghosted, hung up on, and when I finally got through to another supervisor, I was told that I could cancel my post-cruise stay.
Basically, I was told to like it or lump it. I will never, ever book again with Viking.
Preferred solution: It would be nice to get my deposit back, but I will not.

Out of pocket 14,700 would not even a voucher for a cup of coffee from Viking River cruise
Was rushed to the hospital on June 23 for emergency surgery. I was released from the hospital on the 25th.
Our flight was on June 26 from New York to Budapest, and on June 27, we were on a Viking river cruise. Unfortunately, we did not take the insurance, as it was our honeymoon vacation. My wife called Viking to advise them that I had to have emergency surgery; they told her there was nothing they could do. No refund, no voucher, not even a cup of coffee.
We had an explorer suite, and we lost $14,700 because of a medical emergency. I would definitely think twice before booking a trip with them.

Treatment of a person with Stage 4 cancer
- Prepaid about $25,000 for a June 2026 Great Lakes cruise.
- Stage 4 cancer diagnosis made travel impossible; no reschedule, transfer, or refund.
In the summer of 2025, my parents booked a Great Lakes cruise for my wife and me. It would take place in June of 2026. [PERSON_NAME] demanded full payment after the trip was booked, and they paid in full.
In December of that year, I was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. We thought I might be healthy enough to go on the cruise, but due to complications, I will not be able to do it.
It's May now, and my mother contacted them to see if we could reschedule. They said no. My mother asked if my sister and her husband could take my place. They said no. My mother asked if they could get a credit or refund, and they said no. So, my parents are out about $25,000.
She explained how my chemo treatments affected my health, mobility, etc., and they still refused to do anything for us.
I'm so furious I don't know what to do. Please spread the word and tell everyone you know not to use their services.
Worst customer service
Preferred solution: Full refund
User's recommendation: AVOID at all costs.
Your mom needed to purchase travel insurance.
If canceled by February 2 (120 days out) l, the penalty was only $100 per person. That’s WITHOUT insurance also. That seems fair.
Viking is Deceptive and Content to Be That way!
- Viking deceived passengers and kept money.
- Only 1 of 7 days sailed and no refund offered; travellers bused with no lights or A/C.
This company is horrible. We are on a 7 day Danube Cruise.
Viking cannot control the water level, but they were so deceptive. They did not let us know we likely would not sail. Viking allowed all of the passengers to travel to Budapest knowing the desperate situation they are in. Viking management knew and gladly kept our money and took advantage of us.
This is just plain wrong! We are being bussed from place to place. We may only sail 1 day out of 7 and they will not commit to this. Tonight we returned to our stateroomno lights snd the a/c was not on.
If you are bookedDont do it!!! Turn around!
Do not get to Europe only to sit in dock or a hot bus.
Captain, permission to disembark with a full refund. Oh, yeah, they wont let us talk to anyone except poor concierge employees who cant do anything for us.
- Half the ship got COVID; ports were closed at sites.
- Switching ships for known low water not disclosed, causing a popular city to be missed.
Half the ship got COVID; the cruise stopped at the most popular sites when everything was closed. We had to switch ships because of low water, which they knew about ahead of time and didn't inform us.
We missed a very popular city because of it. The ship had to take down the tables and chairs on the top deck for 5 days because of low bridges! We had no outdoor space, and most people wound up in the bar just spreading COVID even more.
The included tours were so basic it was pathetic. Never again.
User's recommendation: Skip it they lie abou so many things.
Poor airline scheduling created a domino effect for luggage and more missed flights.
Viking scheduled airline scheduling caused missed flights with ensuing baggage loss, medications loss, medical equipment loss, and numerous expenses for 5 days during our Viking River Boat Cruise and extended stay in Prague.
User's recommendation: Book flights personally or be involved with the flight selection before travel.

Cancelled cruise due to documented medical emergency
- Cancelled a Viking river cruise due to a medical emergency requiring surgery, leadership denied credit toward future Viking cruise after two calls.
I had to cancel my Viking riverboat cruise due to a documented medical emergency requiring surgery. Viking leadership had zero empathy for the emergency documented surgery that necessitated the cancellation of the cruise.
My request was not for a cash refund but for a credit towards a future Viking cruise.
I spoke with customer service twice, who stated clearly that leadership for the company denied my request for a credit even though all medical details were documented. I would never use Viking, as they have zero empathy for customers who experienced a documented medical emergency.
Short sided leadership which no empathy
Preferred solution: $8000 credit for future cruise

False Advertising and Deceit
- Elbe cruise canceled for low water; passengers bused to ships.
- Viking offered a future cruise voucher; two days' notice, no refunds or rebooking.
A Boat Full of Deceit
A Viking Non-Cruise on the Elbe River
We booked our Viking cruise on the Elbe River through our travel agent in October of 2024 for a sailing date of June/July 2025. The trip was labeled the Elegant Elbe with a pre-cruise stay in Berlin, a 5 day cruise on the Elbe and then a post-cruise stay in Prague.
Two days before we were to fly to Berlin Viking notified us that the cruise could not depart because of low water levels in the Elbe. Instead of cruising Viking would bus us from the docked ship (the Astrild) to our appointed stops and then bus us to another ship (the Beyla) that was also docked further up river where we would stay for another 3 days of our non-cruise and then be bussed to our other advertised stops. Viking apologized for the inconvenience and offered a voucher for a portion off a future cruise, after all they cant control the weather and the amount of rainfall that effects the river level. With only two days of notice; cancelling would mean no refund on the trip and no alternatives for rebooking.
Of course, we were disappointed as well as other passengers not being able to cruise.
I was curious about how low the river was and at for what time period the river was below sailing level. To my surprise I came across an article in Cruise Critic entitled Its not Just the Water Level. According to another article in *Boote Magazine dated March 2025 (see link at bottom) the Elbe River had been impassable by a bridge collapse in Dresden. The collapse took place on September 11, 2024, a month before I booked the trip.
According to the article no passenger vessels were allowed to pass through Dresden and would not be allowed until bridge demolition was completed and unexploded WWII ordinances removed and the river was dredged no earlier that September 2025.
Obviously Viking was aware of this issue for at least 9 months before they gave us a two day notice in June 2025. The waterway was shut down through Dresden by federal decree. Viking representatives never mentioned the bridge incident and continued to blame God for insufficient rain for the ships not sailing to their destination, not the bridge incident. I discussed the revelation with the Captain, Cruise Director and the ships Hotel Manager.
They were all sympathetic, but could not take any responsibility for Viking Corporate decisions. I called Viking Customer Service and confronted them with their deceit. They offered me cash if I were to purchase additional travel insurance for $6,000.00(4 passengers) and paid for it while I was on the phone; I refused. I said there were almost 100 other passengers on the boat unaware of their deceit.
The response of the customer service agent was why did I care about the other passengers? I was aghast at his callousness. He then said he would have me blacklisted from international travel if I shared the truth about the real reasons for not sailing.
Historically the Elbe is impassable due to low water levels, obviously the bridge incident is unprecedented. June and July are times particularly vulnerable to low water; so much so that no other cruise line except Viking even books excursions on the Elbe.
I can only assume the other cruise lines do not book cruises because they are ethical and dont want to ruin their reputation for offering non-existent cruises and perpetrate false advertising. Viking has consistently misinformed passengers about water levels since 2015 when the current 2 Elbe ships were commissioned.
Vikings scam continued up to the point in Prague where we met the next set of duped passengers that were going to take our place on the non-moving cruise ship. They were told the same thing just 2 days before their departure in the U.S. that the non-cruise was due to low water levels only.
There are approximately 82 booked Viking cruises on the Elbe since navigation has been suspended in September 2024. As far as I can tell none of the passengers were told the truth or had a chance to cancel or rebook within a reasonable time frame.
After I got home a senior tier 3 Customer Relations agent contacted me to try to appease me. His offer was slightly better than the original travel voucher initially offered.
Shame on Viking corporate for fraudulent advertising, deceitful business practices and out and out threats. As an Elbe Viking passenger said in a 2017 low water incident Viking is more interested in their cash flow than in the water flow.
